I actually have never cared for Peter David & my joke is I like the Hulk, but not during Peter David’s run (which was 300 issues or something).

I also never cared for Watchmen, always felt like a Squadron Supreme rip off. I’m not even trying to be funny when I say that.

I think comics need to be at all gas stations too. That’s how I bought most of the earliest books in my collection. Right off the newstand next to Guns and Ammo.

On my recent tour they had a long box worth of random comics for $1 a piece at a gas station (but displayed under glass!). A lot of 1990s stuff as you’d expect, but also some 1970s horror & sci-fi comics. They need to start having those bins at all the gas stations.

Alright, so here’s where I get my geek on:

Havok actually rejoined the X-Men in issue 219, making a couple appearances a few issues beforehand. This was after the Mutant Massacre storyline, and just before The Fall of The Mutants. During The Fall story, The X-Men died, but unbeknownst to the rest of the world were resurrected. They decided to remain “dead” and moved to Australia, where they were rendered undetectable by electronic equipment. It’s during this timeframe that Havok/Wolverine takes place in. Wolverine # 1 (ongoing) came out the exact same month as H/W:M # 1.

And yeah, I’ve owned the books for about 15 years now or so, and no matter how terrible it was, I’m not gonna part ways with it just yet. I’ll just bury it under a stack of Marvel Comics Presents.

That Havok/Wolverine Meltdown book I remember buying as it came out full price. I remember even then thinking the words/story sucked, but I found the artwork really interesting. & I think back then the artwork was pretty freaking edgy & awesome, but I’m kind of a sucker for that somewhat sketchy version of painting for comics. I also think that might’ve kinda been a re-introduction to Havok who hadn’t really appeared for about 5 years previous to that. I also think it pre-dates Wolverine having his own monthly series. So at the time it was exciting. I’d be willing to try to do something where I try to take the comic & white out the words & put new ones to tell a better story to go with the art if you want to mail it to me….

It does have a very important semi-public service announcement message of “don’t have sex in a cemetery because that hot check is really an old man.”

I personally think the series might get worse instead of better.

I remember the marketing campaign when the second one came out was “the ball is back!”

I kinda feel like this one as far as being a mystery how this spawned so many sequels has the same thing as Halloween, because I remember that being as slow as molasses.

The problem with the “definitive version” of Metropolis is they seem to find 5 more minutes of footage every five years!

I think the idea and concept of Highlander are great, but the execution of this movie is a stunning failure. I truly do not understand the slavishly devoted following this movie has.

For what it’s worth, and I think I mentioned it on the show, I truly enjoyed the tv show, and it seems that’s where this idea thrived and succeeded.

I am still genuinely mad at all the folks who apparently knew how bad this movie was and said nothing. Nothing!

I’ve always stood by the Dolph Lundgren Punisher movie. So much so that a ladyfriend bought me a movie written, directed, & starring Lundgren & that was pretty awful.

ps. i watched jenifers body with my dad when he came to visit. he picked it off the shelf. he didn’t expect it to be what it was.

Manga is weird sometimes because some of it is really dense & some of it you can read less a whole book in thirty seconds. I guess the same thing is probably true with superhero comics.

I think a penny is not legal tender over $5 or something, not just flat out….

I think these stories work better as individual weird things than presented as this big volume. Great anthology pieces, but together they start to get kinda blurry. Which is basically what I think of Poe & Lovecraft when I try to read their stuff.

Years ago I put a compilation together based on The Music of Erich Zann.

Robert E Howard actually did a lot of weird poetry, might be a perfect match to see some of that stuff done in this style….

I think I own Life on Another Planet and enjoyed it when I read it (about 10 yrs ago or so), I read Kraven’s Last Hunt about 5 years ago and liked it, It’s been forever since I’ve read Born Again, I’d be willing to go back to it. I’ve read a handful of Kabuki, but not enough to have a strong opinion. The rest I’ve never read, but would, theoretically, not be opposed to.

I was reading an interview the other day where a guy was complaining that everyone writes everything from comics to novels as if they are adapting a film to whatever format rather than writing things that work best in the medium they’re working in.

I thought you’d done Batman: Secrets. Maybe you should? I actually bought the book your reading in hardcover when the Borders near me was closing….

I’m a guy who likes your books and the occasional Superman, but I also view comics the way I view any entertainment, there’s more than one genre. It’s so odd that a vast majority of comic fans will love all different types of movies and music, etc., but when it comes to comics, they only like one type, or slight variations of it.

I for one would love to see Kurt Dinse draw a Superman book.

There was a friend of mine that was on a dating site & he’d save the girls’ profile images & then do reviews of first dates on his blog. It was kind of funny in one way, but sometimes went totally creepy. Funny is when it talks about a girl wearing the same green hat that she knitted herself as featured in her profile photo. Creepy is when he ends up having sex with the girl & her photo just looks like the clerk at the grocery store or something where it’s someone you never even think of them as having sexual parts.

There’s definitely a problem where some of the people reviewing my comics are also reviewing Superman comics. “If this Kurt Dinse guy was drawing Superman, he’d totally get fired!” But I also think (or I wouldn’t be doing my comics at all) that the Silber comics are better than the average DC/Marvel book. If not better to everyone, at least better to me.

I picked up the Nightly News a few years ago, and thought it was a tin-foil hat wearing pile of shit. Really turned me off Hickman for a while. SHIELD did a little to help get me interested again, but even in there its got all that conspiracy non-sense tied up in it. Red Mass for Mars though, is sort of cool. A brutal superhero thing, though I think it got rushed toward the end, it could have used another issue. But its definitely not conspiracy non-sense like most of his other stuff.

Paxromana was more conspiracy pap. If you didn’t like Nightly News, avoid it.

I think Nightly News gets a lot of buzz because it appeals to the hipster conspiracy nutter crowd. Also for all its problems its really different from most stuff out there. Interesting use of art and text in some places.

Oregon District: I know what/where it is, but have not heard that phrase. It means little to nothing to me, personally.

Annie Hall, I’ve never seen, so I have no point of reference to it. Also the guy has made 42 movies, so I’m pretty sure there’s a lot we didn’t mention. I’ll certainly be willing to add it to my Netflix queue

About five years ago there was a brief flirtation between Silber & Clem Snide related to a movie he was in (Grodmin is the only thing I see with him in on IMDB, but I don’t think that was the title at the time so maybe this one was never released), but things weren’t a perfect match.

I actually really liked this book. At the same time I felt like it might work better as a movie than a comic. Also (spoiler) I thought it should’ve ended with the dad still being a dead golem instead of twisting around to a “happy” ending.

Good examples: All Star Superman, Astonishing X-men.

Slashes are awesome. Why do so few fonts use them?

The characters in here would be impossible to keep straight reading the books a month apart. While reading it I already couldn’t remember the guy that does the thing on the plane or the floating dude. Old man, girl, actor, burned up dude, & three random guys.

Bottle openers that are worth getting made generally cost about $1 & are made out of aluminum & have a minimum print run of 300. The ones that are a quarter break. So if you want to spot me $300 I’ll get you a good Silber bottle opener. I’m thinking about getting them anyway.

You should be able to download some stats from your webhost that lists “most accessed files” or something like that. If they let you download the raw statistics, I use Weblog Expert Lite to look at my stats because it makes way more sense than the one they provide online.

@Joe If you want to read some Wally Flash stories, just make them yourself. I’m supposedly starting to do some illegitimate stories about the Original Human Torch & Cerebus & Deadpool. We’ll see if they come to fruition. I hate to call it fan fiction since I’m not really knowledgeable enough about them to call it that.

I thought American History X was okay, but propaganda films (for lack of a better term) are a bit lacking since the end of the Cold War. I’m scared of the re-make of Red Dawn. But I generally don’t care for most movies, they’re too long. Then again I’m in the middle of watching a Japanese job cartoon called Armored Troopers VOTOMS that lasts about 30 hours….

I remembered Simon Bisley mainly for his painted type of stuff & I was a little let down on this Lobo book.

Also I was even more upset that BJ McKay & Bear (sheriff Lobo’s nemesises) didn’t appear as truckers.

I had a similar thought about the Droids ‘toon, but it’s been so long since I’ve seen it, I wasn’t sure if I was making that up.

I voted for Jason Young. What I’ve told people who asked me who to vote for or whatever in general is “whatever one they think was best.” Which I think is fair enough. I have a mild fear Dave Sim is going to ask me to withdraw it anyway.

So despite only being 3 when this thing originally aired & that’s the only time I’ve seen it, I do remember thinking it was pretty awful & I fell asleep during an ad or something. But I clearly remember the wookie in an apron & getting pissed off about it. But I looked up the Boba Fett cartoon just now & re-watched it. It was fine, but strangely didn’t look too much like my memory of it. My memory of it had a watery distortion going over the whole thing, which may involve not having a good TV. The animation is pretty French looking & surpisingly the Droids cartoon is stylistically similar….

The acting in Roger Corman’s FF is on par with the other two. The effects in the other two are barely better. Overall Corman’s FF is worth watching as a bad movie, the others, not so much.

If I remember correctly, to read Secret Wars II properly you only have the nine issues of the mini-series, but about 30 tie in issues from every Marvel comic of the time. I’m not sure if it’s done so reading the nine issues alone makes sense or not. I do remember a plot where he makes Daredevil see, but it seemed pretty awful to me even when I read it & as much as this sucked compared to memory, I don’t want to try that. My main memory is thinking that “the white event” that gives all the super powers to folks in the New Universe was a tie in to the finale of SWII, but then it ended up it was from an old man trying to kill himself on the moon….

I actually think the remake of Precinct 13 is superior. I like some Carpenter movies (The Thing, They Live); but I don’t like Halloween or Christine, so there you go.

That bone shaped candy I remember having in a red coffin & you could actually hook the parts together into a complete skeleton.

My Romero order is Dawn, Night, Diary, Day, Land, Survival. Land & Survival I’ve only seen once, so maybe I’ll give them a break at some point.

Once I get an iPad, I will probably buy a majority of my comics digitally (assuming they are available). There will still be things that I buy floppies of, though, but there are some comics that I like, but that I don’t want to have to worry about storing after I’ve read them.

Webcomics I think have the same problem that indie comics did (& still do). So few produce regular content often enough to keep readers interested. Producing three pages every six months only works in the context of producing a story that goes inside an anthology or something.

Digital comics are probably the future for a bunch of reasons, but I prefer the physicals. But I’m not into the way monthly books work & cost these days.

My favorite Clint Eastwood quote is: “It takes just as much work to make a bad movie as a good movie; so you might as well make a good one.”

Also, we did watch the ’60s ROMEO & JULIET in class. For the scene with the boob, the teacher covered up the screen. We could still hear the dialogue, but were deprived of the boobs.

I thought this episode was great, by the way. Kathleen was an excellent guest, and the music was really enjoyable.

I should read Man-Thing sometime, I can’t remember it at all despite knowing I read a dozen issues. You know what I do remember is a character called Captain Universe that in one issue helps a corpse get revenge.

An old comic book store dude told me that he thought the comic that really was the thing that helped make Vertigo possible is Suicide Squad. I haven’t read enough issues to say anything, but I know Shade is sometimes a member & John Ostrander wrote a lot of it, so I should check it out. But I guess if you really want to get into why Vertigo was able to happen, I suppose it might be the death of a bunch of indies (Eclipse, Eternity, Comico, First, etc.) leaving readers wanting that kind of work & other people needing a publisher.

If success comes, I’ll make sure “guttertrash.net” is written on my arm with a sharpie before I overdose on narcotics & alcohol.

Comixpress theoretically distributes comics to shops POD at a decent rate. Don’t know if Mavericks would be interested in looking into it.

I use to work at a Michael’s Arts & Crafts & we opened regular time at 9am on New Years Day & all these people still drunk & up from the previous night came in buying glitter. Awesome. But in general I haven’t minded working on holidays anywhere I worked because I got an extra day’s wages for the week instead of losing a day’s wages.

Dialectic writing sucks. I refused to read those types of works for my whole career in school. Strangely it had very little effect on my final test grades….

Have you ever read that book Super Folks? Supposedly one of the first deconstuctionist super hero things, it’s a novel you can find used (or I suppose I could mail you mine as I don’t imagine I’ll read it again).

I haven’t read all of Stan Lee’s stuff, but some of the early Avengers stuff where Captain America is putting himself on semi-suicide missions & beats up Rick Jones so he can’t become Bucky is pretty solid. I probably should read more of that early Marvel stuff. I do have my doubts about him as a creator & I do think his writing legacy is probably weakened dramatically from the period where he wrote 100 books a year. It is interesting to me that he has no problem writing the same book twice or lifting characters from classic sci-fi or mythology or other comics. You have to keep in mind he was writing comics at a period when they were ephemera & not intended for the re-readings they get today.

But I have to say, Jason’s GWAR exception should be the ONLY exception to wearing the shirt of the band your going to see. In the words of the great Jeremy Piven from the timeless classic “PCU,” “Don’t be ‘that guy,’ man. Don’t be ‘that guy.’”

OK, truth be told I didn’t listen to the whole thing. When you guys review something I haven’t seen or read, I listen to half of the review, decide if the something interests me, and if it does I don’t listen to the rest of the podcast until I’ve consumed the something. But seriously, what I heard was very funny.

And Brian – I would pay wicked good money for that comic.

I haven’t seen the Whiteout movie (& I don’t know that I ever will), but it made me want to re-read the Grendel Tales story in Antarctica (not that Greg Rucka wrote some Grendel stuff (can’t remember if he wrote that Grendel Tales), & some of it took place in the snow of the Himalayas, haven’t read Rucka’s Batman stuff, but I hope it has snow as well).

Favorite snow movie: Well, it should be The Empire Strikes Back, but the scenes on Hoth have really thick black lines anytime they’re blue-screening & for whatever reason they chose not to fix that when remastering the shit & adding skies in to Cloud City. So I guess I’ll go with Sin City if it has snow in the movie (get the movie & comic confused, which I suppose is a compliment to the movie), otherwise I’m torn, is there snow in Frankenstein meets The Wolfman?

I actually read this book & was just kinda “whatever” on it. Strangely I think that’s my reaction to every comic I’ve read about World War II except Maus & The Invaders, but I keep going back for more. Maybe I need to write a fan fiction for you about Matt Murdock going back in time & trying to get drafted to fight in WWII even though he’s blind, but they don’t let him join the army because “duh, he’s blind” so he decides the next best thing he can do is console the wives of soldiers & it ends up he’s the biological father of all the original X-Men. Now there’s a DD crossover event.

Hitchcock is pretty hit or miss film maker in my opinion when you start to see the non-famous movies. But, hey, to complete one good movie is admirable.

I guess this Wonder Woman costume is slightly better than her white jumpsuit in the 1970s. Or maybe not, hard to say….

1 can corn
1 egg (for binding)
1/2 cup dry oatmeal (not instant)
1 diced & carmelized bell pepper
spices (black pepper or curry or whatever you like) to taste
leave mixture raw (except for bell peppers or if you want to add mushrooms (which need most of the liquid cooked out of them) or spinach, cook these as well) & mix together with your hands breaking up the beans slightly until everything is homogenous.
The secret part: get two “burger sized” tupperware containers that fit into each other & put plastic wrap in one, put a bunch of the stuff in the plastic wrap, fold plastic wrap over covering the mixture, put second container on top of the stuf & smash it down to compress the burger, put burger (still in plastic wrap) on a cookie sheet for 20 minutes to set or leave frozen.
Note: Burger not sturdy enough to cook on a grill, experiment with times for microwave cooking. Take care flipping in a pan, they’re a little delicate compared to the factory made ones.

I never got to mention on the show, but yeah, Primer is, for the most part, very professional looking for such a low-budget debut film.

I gotta disagree with you on Constantine and Punisher. They’re not awful because they’re their own things. They’re just awful. I think when doing an adaptation of a comic (or anything with established characters) at least get the basics right. It’s not like there’s too much to grasp beforehand with either of those characters.

But even if that had remained faithful, those movies would still be terrible.

I have a big thing about if you’re making an indie film, you probably should write it only after you have the cast so they don’t have to actually act. Because it’s hard to find decent actors.

Part of why I think Primer really works is that the cinematography is decent & the lighting is decent. So many indie films are near unwatchable to me for this reason.

My episode of Cerebus TV is mainly Dave Sim reading Lost Kisses #5 out loud (the “Am I Freaking Cerebus?” issue) & then reading some reviews of Ultimate Lost Kisses #11 (the issue Sim drew) with him commenting on what the reviewers think of it. You can watch this thing that I shot for the episode that ended up not getting used here for a limited time (though I have no idea what the limit would be). While I’m talking about things for a limited time you can check out a really unlistenable (it’s just a really long slow moving chord structure) 4.5 hour piece I’m working on here.

Oh, I don’t have silly bands, but I just got some Silber wrist bands (like the Lance Armstrong yellow ones) made. Available in red, white, black, or blue.

Personally I feel like the best comic adaptions have been Constantine & The Punisher (Dolph Lundgren (sp?) version) have been the best adaptions because they are their own things, but I know they’re pretty hated by comic fans.

Survival of the Dead is awful in my opinion. If your favorite Romero movie is Land of the Dead you’ll like it. If you thought Romero was back on track with Diary, Survival is awful.

I liked Constantine, but think of it as non-canonical. I generally don’t like Keanu Reeves, but I strangely thought he was better than usual. I liked that they didn’t make it a romance story. Is the teenage suicide thing a plot point from Hellblazer.

I pretend that there’s a twist ending to Demolition Man where Sandra Bullock is Stallone’s daughter.

Otherwise, I don’t have any pieces of Darkseid at all, I haven’t even finished the Giganta series or started the Chemo series.

While Anthony Perkins was gay when ladies like Jane Fonda & Raquel Welch tried to have sex with him, supposedly once he had sex with a woman for the first time he never turned back.

While I was in college Brimely was in a movie filming nearby & this friend of mine took a box of oatmeal for him to sign.

I broke down & bought that 800 page Golden Age Marvel Comics Omnibus. I know it’s way too much for an episode, but maybe we can do a mini-sode at SPACE on the reprint of Marvel Comics #1.

I haven’t read any other comments because I’m remaining spoiler free, and I hope you know I’m being sarcastic. :)

You guys might like Solaris (the new one, the original Russian one is a bit of a snoozefest). It’s a few explosions away from an action movie.

For describing a person, you’re supposed to include detail that’s pertinent to the story. Example of what not to do, “John Doe, who has a hairy chest, is the owner of the ice shop.” The descriptor doesn’t really fit the story. If the story were about hairy chests, then you would include that info. Same goes for race – you don’t need to describe someone as black or white if there isn’t a purpose to it – these are the rules journalists live by.

I just called a Thai place for takeout. They told me the kitchen didn’t open until 5 pm and to call back then to place an order. It was 4:55. I asked if they could take my order and then put it in at 5 – they agreed.

Also, I saw Serenity before I ever watched Firefly. I actually saw Serenity twice in the theatre before I ever watched Firefly. In retrospect I wish I hadn’t, but I still loved the movie even without having seen the backstory.

I’m pretty sure I’ve only smoked once, and yep, it was with you, Jensen and the hobos. If we did it more than once, I seriously do not remember, but any time I’ve ever done it was at your house, for certain.

Just to let you know I saw this podcast’s subject and then went to blockbuster and rented Moon, then listened to your podcast. I loved Moon. In the opening credits when I saw Kaya Scodelario was in it I got really excited. Too bad she’s barely in the movie. If you don’t know who she is she’s Effy from Skins. Skins is awesome! Jason if you smoked weed for 14 years you’ll love Skins. Check it out.

Joe – You’re probably right, but at least you don’t have a podcast.

It’s not necessarily a “take-out” thing, but if you called any business, and they answered another call in the middle of talking to you and took care of them first, I think it’s rude. You put first caller (you) on hold and answer the other line only to put them on hold so that first caller can be taken care of. Again, fully aware that I may have overreacted, but it does piss me off.

I’ve never called in a takeout order & have been involved with takeout about 3 times (2 Chinese & 1 pizza), so I’m not sure what to tell you. Why do they even have two lines where you can hear what’s going on? Is it a part line or something? Shouldn’t they need to put you on hold so you can hear some Kenny G?

I think I was drunk the first time I smoked weed, but I do remember feeling like “now I can say I smoked weed.” I’d already dropped acid a few times so it was a pretty big let down.

CQ – I agree with Jason – it’s ok. The ending is kind of weak, but the sets and all that are fun. It’s not really something you can recommend to everyone.

So – what the hell is Ultimate X about? I NEED TO KNOW!!!! Marvel’s ads keep taunting me with their “Who is Ultimate X?” question. If they’re not going to tell me, I’m not going to read it.

Anyway – I would like to point out I’m two for two on recommendations
(other than the D&D in prison thing).

I’m going to check out Chew, on your recommendation. I know you guys have some thing against manga, but Akira is probably the best comics I’ve ever read. Still recommend that if you haven’t read it!

My scary movies from childhood were/are:

Salem’s Lot – I saw this when it aired when I was 4. That kid scratching on the glass still freaks me out. Strangely I remember a scene that seems to not be in it when I re-saw it 15 years ago. The scene was nails coming up out of a cargo crate with the vampire’s coffin inside. Also it seems like the crate was in a dumpster so it totally might’ve been a dream inspired by the movie.

Dawn of the Dead – I thought was a documentary because of the way it’s shot & that I was 7. Still incredible & has probably influenced everything creative I have ever worked on.

Children of the Corn – I saw this when I was 9. That kid cutting the pentagram on his chest & saying, “It’s my birthday” probably led to me being a cutter when I was a teenager. Also it gave me mixed feelings of whether evil was cool or not cool.

The Fly – I was 11 when this came out? I could’ve sworn I was 9. The whole thing that freaked me out was I felt like Jeff Goldblum was smart in a similar way to me (of course these days they call that Asperger’s Syndrome) so I could relate to him.

Who knows who actually puts in the word balloons on the big books at Marvel. Probably the same dude that fills the toner in the copier.

I think my one panel per page mini’s work well for inexperienced artists for this reason. Though then again people get confused by needing flip a flip over. “Half the pages are upside down! Your prints are fucked up!”

Like you I was always aware of Rocketeer, but had never read it. I was always under the impression it was a renewal of an old book (like The Spirit or The Shield or Black Hood (all of which were relaunched around that time)). So I have to say I’m impressed he could make something so iconic with such little output. Of course how many issues of the Turtles were there before they were a hot property?

Looking forward to From Beyond. A more recent movie in the same style of goodness is The Attic Expeditions.

Still listening to this episode – will comment more, maybe.

Incidentally, I think this version of “Clash of the Titans” IS trying to be serious, which is why it will be lame. It’s a cheap theater watch for me at best.

Good episode, boys. It felt a lot more loose than previous episodes, which was refreshing. Probably because you weren’t confined to the ‘review’ format. It was a fun one. Merry Christmas (three days late)!

The Batman thing… Batman, it turns out, is not really dead, nor did he ever die. However, he is lost in time, and DC announced, one month into the new status quo, that they’re bringing him back this summer. So, basically before the newest storyline has even a chance to breath, DC’s already back pedaling, which is a shame, since the new stuff is actually getting critical acclaim. But, I’ll be buying Batman as long as Grant Morrison is writing it. And I’ll be buying Daredevil no matter what, because I’m a big geek for DD, and bitching about the continuity of it despite myself.

Did not know that porn originally tried to go for Blu-Ray, I had only ever heard about the HD-DVD, which is why I was surprised when Blu-Ray won out. Guess I know why, now.

My experience with Daredevil was not having read anything since Born Again (20 years ago now? I am old…) & when I got Yellow I thought he’d switched back to that costume. Or that it was part of one of the Marvel relaunches to fix continuity they do every five years. (Now there’s an episode, no particular book, but just a discussion of all the big-crossover things that Marvel/DC have done to try to fix continuity problems & how they are happening closer & closer together. Batman died & was brought back to life before the story finished a year ago, right?)

That Kevin Smith Daredevil stuff was pretty much the worst Daredevil thing ever. But it probably did co-ordinate better with the movie than any previous Daredevil books.

My understanding is that porn wanted to go with Blu-Ray, but originally the only manufacturing company was Sony & they refused to make the porn discs. When porn went to HD-DVD & Sony realized they might lose the format battle & that would also jeopardize the Playstation 3′s success they decided they could manufacture porn.

I’d like to see GI Joe Resolute, but it’s a “Very Long Wait” on Netflix right now.

I am a huge GI Joe fan. I went into the movie with realistic expectations – bad acting and dialogue coupled with cool explosions. I got bad action and dialogue, a horrible plot and crappy special effects. It made Mortal Kombat: Annihilation look like an Oscar winner by comparison. However, GI Joe: Resolute is awesome. I’m hoping we get more GI Joe like that.
